I'm not surprised - printer companies make their money selling consumables, not printers.

Why is the toner almost the same price as the printer itself?

Even if the printer doesn't come with toner (but if it does, then the pricing is even worse) the fact that an entire printer is almost the same as just the toner does not make sense.

You'll see the same phenomenon with inkjet printers if you visit any computer shop - that's just the way the printer companies operate. They suck you in with cheap hardware, and then make money off you selling black gold.

If I were you, I'd try to find a printer which you can readily get cheap compatible toners for. I've got a Canon LBP-3300 printer which uses an older style toner cartridge, which is widely available, and costs about 1/3 of the price of a genuine Canon toner.

I have a couple of inkjets myself. Canon i450 and Canon Pixma iP2000

Both use the same cartridges, which are rather cheap. Black can be $30 new but refills are $10 and 3rd party cartridges are sometimes even cheaper.

Not sure about colour (still got a 3rd party spare) but I imagine it's about the same.

Not really something I did on purpose, it just happened. But it is useful.

Quite a few years back PC World (which I've subscribed to from before Chris Keall came and went) did a review on Ink Jet (Bubble Jet, whatever the particular trade name is) cartridges and it came out that stuff like Baluga Caviar and (I think) Bollinger Champagne each worked out cheaper (cc for cc, pound for pound) and you'd never really think of buying those on a daily basis!
