Default Can people please look through proposed desktop build

    Guys.

Looking at getting something like the following from computerlounge who have helped me with most of the layout below. Just keen to know if its overkill for what I generally use the PC for and should I be downgrading the processer and motherboard ( for example). The last machine I built was in 2000 and was relatively well specced. Its starting to get very tired now. I've got a chunky tax rebate (from 2005 of all years!!!) and have some cash to spend but don't want to buy latest tech when it might be of little use. I generally use the PC for the following -

    50% Internet, Torrents, browsing etc,
15% Gaming - Not always the latest and greatest but generally newer ones
15% Editing Digital Images, CS2, Burning DVD's, CD's, Ripping etc
10% Video Editing - New Sony HD, HDD camcorder to empty and edit
10% watching movies / Perhaps Freeview HD at a later stage

The spec is as follows :

    Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz processor Socket LGA1366, 8MB L3 Cache

    ASUS P6T X58 (Socket LGA1366) Core i7 PCI-E DDR3 Crossfire + SLi Motherboard

Lian-Li PC-7FW Aluminium Mid Tower Case with blue led fan

    Corsair TR3X3G1333C9 (3GB) 3x1GB DDR3-1333 XMS3 9-9-9-24

Noctua NH-U12B CPU Cooler and Fan

ASUS DRW-20B1LT 20x LightScribe DVD Writer

Corsair 650W TX Series Power Supply

    Galaxy nVidia Geforce GTX 260+ Core 216 896MB DDR3 PCI-E

LG W2252TQ-PF 22" 10000:1 2MS Piano Black HDCP Black LCD

Western Digital 640GB Black Caviar SATAII 7200RPM 32MB Cache

Still to add mouse, keyboard and not sure if I need a seperate sound card.

Approx price so far of $3100 inc GST.

    Thanks for some learned input.

IMO that's overkill for what you're going to do.

2000 dollars should be enough for what you're after

I'd drop the i7/DDR3 combo and just go for DDR2-1066 and either AMD Phenom II or Intel Q6600/E8400

I'm a big overkill fan myself, but i'd go with something a little more conventional if your not gaming much.

drop the I7 gears, the rests all good imo

Yeah I think ddr 3 ram still costs too much for fast low latency ddr3 that is.
Sure you can get some at a good price but the good stuff is pretty dear.
But hay if you can afford it well, enjoy, but personally I would wait for the faster/good ddr 3 ram to become cheaper.
The E8400,E8500,E8600,and the quad series cpu's are plenty fast for most people.
Plus I want more i7 motherboard's to come out so they become cheaper and we get more to choose from and of course better ones as well.

CHange the graphics card to Gigabyte or ASUS.
Bump the PSU up to 750w.
Other than that I'll go away and drool over the specs now........

    Guys

Thx for your help so far..Not having looked at PC's for 7 years apart from sticking in larger HD's I am very confused! If i changed the mobo, processor and memory to the following, is there anything else I need to be concerned or thinking of? Also, would the revised setup allow me to install a tv card for HD freeview etc without stuttering or creep in viewing?

    INTEL CORE 2 DUO E8500 3.16GHZ + THERMALRIGHT ULTRA 120 COOLER

    ASUS P5Q DELUXE INTEL LGA775 P45 ATX

    CORSAIR TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX 2 X 2GB DDR2-800 XMS2

Lian-Li PC-7FW Aluminium Mid Tower Case with blue led fan

ASUS DRW-20B1LT 20x LightScribe DVD Writer

Corsair 650W TX Series Power Supply

Galaxy nVidia Geforce GTX 260+ Core 216 896MB DDR3 PCI-E - Will this run okay in new mobo?

LG W2252TQ-PF 22" 10000:1 2MS Piano Black HDCP Black LCD

Western Digital 640GB Black Caviar SATAII 7200RPM 32MB Cache

Now down to around $2100..Quite a difference...

Appreciate your comments on the first suggested build. Will i notice major differences in speed etc or prob not based on what I use it for?

    Thank you

Yep.....it all looks good. Some people don't like Galaxy though. I do personally like Asus or Gigabyte better.

Yeah a bigger psu would be good such as a 750/850 watt so you have some headroom for later on for when you upgrade your graphics card in the future etc.

A 22x sata dvd burner as well.

This would be better:Intel Core 2 Duo E8600, 3.33GHz dual core 6MB 45nm -(Make sure you get a EO Steeping cpu can be overclocked to 4Ghz +).
