    what is this and how does it affect games , in particular oblivion?
    Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

    does it tax the gfx card( ie use more ram)?

    OK, won't use it then , gfx card can only just handle oblivion now

    Over the years the monitors I use have got bigger so these days I notice little difference when anti-aliasing is turned off.

    Download FRAPS if you want to see what frames-per-second difference each setting makes. It'll show the fps count in the upper corner of the screen as you play.

    Also Tweakguides is really good for game-specific and general info on what different setting do.

    Anti-Aliasing has a huge effect on fps, especially when run at the higher levels.

    I play pretty much all my games with it turned off, I bump all the graphics settings up until I have around the fps I want, and it's smooth enough to satisfy me without AA.
