    ...in simple terms:

    (i) Open Control Panel

    (ii) Double click Multimedia

(iii) On the Audio Tab check (enable) the box marked 'show volume control on task bar'

    (iv) Click Apply/Okay

    (v) Done

    TIPS:

    - left click icon to pull up control bar

    - right click icon to either adjust Audio Properties or open Volume Control Panel

    - Internet style Keyboards have mute and volume controls

What type of sound-card are you using? Or is it an integrated one? Can you enter the "Sounds, Speech, Audio devices" section under the control panel? And can you enter "Sounds And Audio devices" under that section? At which stage does it ask you to "add programs"? Since you are using Xp, you might want to consider upgrading your WMP to version 10. Cheers
