Yea it's not only the speed that's been an issue with Nortons in the past.
Not picking up viruses has been a big problem too.
Many times I have removed NAV/NIS, that was fully up-to-date and a scan had been run and passed, put on NOD32, updated and run a scan and it's picked up viruses.

The biggest issue I have with their AV apps is that they don't actually work - I wouldn't mind the system impact if Norton's detection/removal rates were substantially better than NOD32/Kaspersky etc.

Needless to say they're not.

Why? mags have been giving Nortons brilliant ratings for years. Why should we start believing any of them now?

I was wondering how long it would take for NIS 2009 to get a mention here and it doesn't surprise me it is already being knocked by those who haven't even seen it yet based purely on Norton's past bad reputation.

The review I read in the paper a few weeks ago said pretty much the same as the one in the link above:

This is definitely the slimmest, most unobtrusive Norton ever, yet its protection is top-notch where it counts. Certainly, there are plenty of crusty old users out there who will refuse to believe that Norton can be a quick, speedy suite. Don't listen to them—they're living in the past. That's not to say the suite doesn't have its problems. The antispam is useless, and the parental controls are rudimentary. But this is definitely the best all-around security suite I've ever seen

If it weren't for the fact that the author in the review I read a couple of weeks ago was just as much anti-Norton products as I am then I would be sceptical as well. However, maybe Norton has actually finally come up with the goods so until proven otherwise in the real world then I'm keeping an open mind. Those who choose to knock NIS 2009 might yet end up having to eat humble pie.

Doubt it - heres an example - have just this morning finished doing a test on the new NIS 2009 Laughing because its still crap.

Have a customers PC - copied the drive the other day before working on it.

Original Drive, Remove the DEAD nortons that was on there - installed the following Nod32, Spyware terminator, Spybot, malware Bytes, super Antispyware.

Ran Nod32 - removed 1 virus on boot, ran a full scan and removed a further 17 Viruses + various spyware totaling 153.

Ran Antimalware programs removing a further combined 810 infections.


Installed the copied drive back on the PC:
Downloaded NIS2009 Via a clean workshop pc and booted from the copied drive - removed the dead nortons - why dead- easy one of the infections disabled the current Norton on startup.

Rebooted and installed ( or tried) to install 2009 - wouldn't install, had to install Nod32 to kill the virus first. Then removed Nod32, and then 2009 would install, ran update and did a full scan - Results - 8 viruses and 297 spyware.

Result - Norton was killed on Install, so had to use another program first Seems NIS missed a few infections.

Edited: PC Still slower with Norton installed compared to nod32.

Yep, lots of closed minds around. I don't buy these suites but just maybe I won't have to immediately uninstall NIS 2009 when I come across it!
