Asus laptop - first boot up taking over 2 hrs to complete

Hi all,

Well, I have a new ASUS laptop and it has been trying to complete the first setup boot for the last 2 hours and it still hasn't finished.

The Windows setup where you accept the EULA, enter your region and name etc completed OK and then it automatically rebooted. During this second restart it started the "Installing ASUS applications now. Please wait" with a rolling activity bar (not progress completed bar). Problem is, it has now been 2 hours at this stage. Is this normal? I am reluctant to force a reboot in case this stage does take a while.

Anyone else setup an Asus laptop for the first time, and if so, how long did it take.

Not had one take 2 hours, only had a HP lappie take about an hour once, but that was VERY min spec, no where near the Spec's in the Link above .

Does the HD LED show activity - it may be a case of suck it and see by turning it off and restarting - worse case is the original factory image may be faulty, and need the recovery to be run ???

The HDD light shows no activity, but then toggling the caps lock doesn't activate that light either.

OK, so I'm going in for the reboot! Wish me luck.

Never known a Linux user to be so excited to see a Windows desktop load.

It appears to be fine now, so I'm guessing it just got stuck in a loop somewhere.

I had one of those today, a customer brought a PC off of trademe for a whole $100 - I was watching it and saying --- well you gonna start or what It was Ubuntu.

Yeah well, it was short lived.

Just had to run the recovery disk on it due to rather flaky Windows behaviour and Explorer being suicidal and then not re-spawning, amongst other random behaviour.

Turns out that 2.5 hours is not considered a *long* time by the computer tech assigned to the store I got it from and me doing a hard reset was behind my problems. He told me another ASUS laptop he just had to restore took four hours to complete because the owner turned the power off after waiting a considerable amount of time for their installation boot up to complete!!

I was being impatient by only waiting 2.5 hours. Told me to leave it at least four hours.

Anyhow, after the recovery disk ran I repeated the initial boot up and it only took 20 minutes to complete. Go figure.

The 20 minutes sounds more like it - I ran a factory restore on a customers Dell laptop two weekends ago, from memory it took around an hour to run the recovery and first boot, The laptop wasn't exactly "High Performance" - then I installed SP1.

Personally I think the Images some of these companies load are faulty to start with - its happening way to much.

The Asus I done for my brother took a few hours, My HP took most of the morning, I just let them do their thing.......

So....How is the Vista experience so far?

I've given my laptop a few months, which I think is more then fair, My hate for Vista grows every time I use it, So much of it is just crap for craps sake, and I can see no logic in the dogs breakfast they have made out of the documents folder hierarchy.

Its been at the point for quite a while where I avoid using my laptop for just about anything simply just to the faeces known as Vista. MS have always sucked pretty bad for various reasons but this just takes the cake.

About time I removed all traces of HP and Vista filth.
