    Default Broadband Connection Issues

    (On windows xp)

It has been a long time since I have tried to connect my laptop to a broadband/local area connection. I'm always on wireless. Anyways, I was trying to connect to a cable modem and I can't get it to work. It didn't even recognize that I was putting a chord into the computer. I went to Network Connections, tried to create a new connection...and what I ended up with was:

    "Local Area Connection 2"
    Limited or No connectivity
    Microsoft Loopback Adapter

I think I did something wrong. I don't remember what my old connection for broadband was called, but I don't remember it being Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

So, I tried a separate PC at a different house. That didn't work either.

I tried to create a new connection following these steps. 1) "Connect to the Internet", 2) "Set up my connection manually", 3) "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on....then it tells me "Your broadband connection should already be configured and ready to use."

I ran ipconfig/all and it says my autoconfigured IP address is 169.254.25.129....shouldn't it be something like 192.168.0.**?

I can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Is the network adapter enabled? If unused, it is frequently turned off in laptops to save power.

    [start]>[control panel]>[system]>[hardware]>[network adapter]
    Entropy is not what
    it used to be.

There is no "Local Area Connection"...how do I create it?

There is... "Wireless Network Connection" and a VPN for my school. Only thing else is the Local Area Connection 2, which is the microsoft loopback thing.

    I don't see "network adapter."

I have "Device Manager", "Drivers" (with buttons for Driver Signing and Windows Update), and I have "Hardware profiles."

Doesnt sound like there's any NIC in it then.

If there's no network adapter (or entry under this), in device manager

Under device manager it only has "Intel Pro/wireles..." and "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" under Network Adapters.

Quick check - you're not accidentally plugging it into a modem slot are you? (I've done that a few times).

Have a look in device manager and see if you can find reference to a network adapter. If it doesn't show up that would be the problem - you may either not have an adapter installed, or the driver may not be installed.
