Default Getting a Movie to fit on to a CD

    Hi there

My sister in Australia has had my parents home movies converted onto a DVD, but I want to show them on a PC with a CD reader, so i need to convert them.

Im using AVS Video Converter, but while its converting them to an AVI file, irts almost the same size as the original 4.7Gb.

What settings do I need to reduce the movie (I accept a loss in quality) so it fits onto a CD.

    Thanks

    John in Mosgiel.

Hmm. I can't help, but I know it can be done, to actually quite a reasonable standard - I've seen some good examples. Hopefully someone can steer you in the right direction.

DivX format would do it I think as a whole movie fits on a standard cd using it

    AutoGK.

Set it to encode to 700MB and press start.

Maybe try DVDx to convert to mpeg - then to VCD. Tutorial here...

I think you can also convert a DVD to mpeg (I think with DVD2AVI and TMPGenc) then to VCD (in a burning program, e.g. Nero) to burn on a CD...

In todays society if you're going to be playing it back on a PC then steer clear of DivX. At least opt for XviD if you must, but ideally h.264 codecs such as the x264 encoder are best value, ESPECIALLY if you're going to drop it down to 700MB

With this in mind, I'd suggest you find a 'relative' bitrate that works, obviously an 80 min video at 700MB will look much better than a 3hr video at 700MB because it's using a MUCH lower bitrate...

Re-authoring and shrinking from a DL DVD to "4.7 GB DVD" is OK but I'd pass the rest of the work over to the aforementioned AutoGK to get it down 700 MB.
