Default I almost got ripped off today....

I almost got ripped off today, so I'm posting this as a warning to others.

Our AEG Vampyr vacuum cleaner hose became detached from the handpiece, so I took it in to Vacuum Cleaner Specialists. Here is their shi**y website:
    http://www.vacs2u.co.nz/index.php?main
They appear to be a nationwide company.

The person serving said she was very sorry but there was nothing they could do. They could sell me a new hose, but it would cost the same as this very excellent reconditioned vaccuum cleaner over here.

I said "No thanks" and took it home. With a screwdriver I prised the handpiece apart and within 5 min I had the bloody thing fixed. It's as good as new.

Now, why didn't people who call themselves vacuum cleaner "specialists" know how to do this? Maybe I should go into business as competition to Vacuum Cleaner Specialists? I could call myself Vacuum Cleaner Ace. All I'd need is a screwdriver.

Quite often, getting spare parts costs more than the machine itself - hence the disposable society we live in.

It's good to hear you fixed it yourself though - save even more money.

Some of the time when you speak to the "people serving" they simply don't know any better.

Its happening more and more these days, places hire staff to man the counters or phones, ( xtra comes to mind) who really don't have the knowledge of the product they are meant to be selling. Had you spoken to someone else you may very well had got a different result.

I had a similar experience today - rang one of my vendors to get Office 2007 charity licensing for a customer - the guy I spoke to said - you cant do this, that and a few other things I did last time.

He suggested I email the details through and I got a reply from someone who DID KNOW what could and couldn't be done - end result- customer VERY happy with pricing I quoted, and well under half the original price the first guy quoted me.

Alot of these places that do repair of household appliances, ususally just switch over a part, rather than looking at repairing the part itself, and often the part costs almost as much as the appliance itself. I do most of my own repairs where I can, as often it isn't too difficult.

Since when did a vacuum cleaner become a 'suction centre'?

Yeah, well, we'd been using it with duct tape for about 6 months, but the machine had lost it's suck, so we thought we'd get it fixed properly.

You must stir it and stump it,

I'd ring the manager and ask him.

There was an article the other day in the paper saying the average male (and probably female) is useless at any handyman task these days.
