Default Vintage Mitsubishi MP286L Laptop boot issue

    Hi

My laptop won't boot and the cmos battery is flat. Google tells me a special prog is needed to set up the bios settings from fdd. I also believe the fdd is 720kb. The laptop itself is from late 80's, I think 1989. I don't know what os it has either as yet. I was told the 720kb's were last made 15years ago, but I scratched around and finally located a 720kb disk to use. My XP computer tells me the file system on that old floppy is FAT.

My question is: Can I write to it from XP with its' 1.44mb drive and expect that to work in the laptop? What boot DOS version should I use on the floppy?

    Here is some google info:

You don't know what O/S? Why bother then?

Its probably DOS 5.0. Or maybe DOS 3.0.

That must be the older, slower 8 mhz model - the blisteringly fast 10 mhz model produced the next year (1990) had the standard 1.44 floppy!

This laptop was manufactured in 1990 August and is a 286-10hmhz computer in a laptop form factor and has a customized carrying case. Actually, the proper word for this computer might actually be luggable, since the MP286L is almost 4 inches thick and weighs more than 10 pounds. It uses an 11.5 inch LCD standard 1.44 floppy drive, and a MFM 3.5 inch hard drive (type 11) and has a full size keyboard. An interesting feature of this laptop is that the power LED also functions as a reset button when it is pushed.

Well if it can read it and it says it's using FAT filesystem then it should be able to write to it fine also.

Then you'll just need to find a way to get it bootable with DOS if it's not already - and do you even have the setup program?
Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.

Well, success of sorts though not quite the way I expected it. I downloaded the dos5 boot files and extracted onto a 1.44mb floppy. It worked, so I guess it must be a 1.44mb drive. The setup prog "gsetup31", I downloaded and it works but my cmos battery is flat. For fun I might get a new battery but couldnt see myself actually using one of these dinosaurs.
My, how things have changed. This is a laptop before the term was invented, it's just that you need a very strong lap.
I will post back when I get the battery.......
    Thanks to all.

Why exactly are you doing this? You know, laptops (I mean proper ones) aren't actually that expensive nowadays...
