Things required to consider for RAM compatibility

Hi,

Many people ask me, which RAM is suitable for their laptop or
desktop computers. Although I answer to match the number on the
existing RAM e.g. DDR400 etc.
As per I know, just required to match this number on any online store
and just buy it.

I am talking about the things required to consider for RAM compatibility.

Please guide me, what should I look for. Is it safe to buy the RAM by just
looking the number on the sticker e.g. DDR400 etc ?

If sticker is not there on the existing RAM, is there any way to find the
RAM type?
