I manually update AVG each week. But this week despite several attempts each time I try I get an "unsuccessful" message.
Any ideas why?
Thx.

Bugger the cancer. I'm suffering from terminal inertia.
Mine updates automatically and no problems recently. The virus base is 269.19.17/1252. Recently myself and others had problems with, a different program Ad-aware and had to update to the 2007 version (SG pointed out this).
Perhaps you need to do something similar

By "Manually" do you still update from within the program? Recently I found that the free update servers were very slow to respond and it just timed out. The AVG forum advice seemed stuck on clearing the update cache or making sure that the date/time of your system was correct but I don't think it was anything at the client end. Eventually it came right.
Yep. I set it to run automatically at startup. When I want to update I right-click the icon in the taskbar - erm, not exactly the taskbar but in the lower-right hand corner of the monitor, y'know what I mean, then select "Check for Updates". No joy. It kinda goes through the process but remains un-updated.
(Win XP Pro SP1, AVG Free version).

While this was happening for me I couldn't even download the update files off the AVG download site even though I could download the program itself. Be patient and give it a few days. The paid version has better access to distributed update servers.
What version of AVG Free are you ruing?, you should have 7.5.516
if you have 7.5, then try reinstalling AVG.
Maybe answer is in this thread

I had someone ring up last week complaining that their AVG couldn't update so arranged to have a look at it later in the week. By then however, it had fixed itself. Give it a few days and yours may do the same.
Totally different program.![]()
Any issues with your Firewall? Comodo sometimes goes crazy over AVG.
