Question Can't see 'Shared file' in 'My Network Places'

I've started another thread with this question - although it related to my wireless networking problems. This has arisen as a contributing (but separate) problem, I feel.

When I set up folders on my desktop PC to be shared on the network - the hand shows under the file name, but when I go to My Network Places on the same PC, the folder is absent! I have undone/redone this a number of times, but with no change.

Suggestions to solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Work your Way through This Help Section and see if it fixes it.

Just an update to above, if after doing all the instructions in the link it still wont show as shared, right click the Shared folder( two people in the corner) select properties/Sharing Tab/ Advanced Sharing/ Tick "Share This Folder" / Apply/ok

    EDITED:
Just thought - those instructions are for Vista - You may have XP - if so Go Here - instructions how.

Yep - in a hurry - always problems occur! I've been out and about.

OS - Window XP Pro, and yes I am set up as admin. I should point out that the original question was around wireless networking which worked just fine a few months ago, but then one computer couldn't ping the other, and one thing led to another - as it does! I have sorted out the ping problems, and can see and transfer files off one computer to the other, but not in the reverse. The current problem (see original in this posting) seemed to be separate - but perhaps largely contributary to the problem with file transfer via wireless.

Wainui - I'll work my way through your suggestions - thanks very much. But probably not for a few days, as I have a few things on (can't take my 'puter sailing!).

    Thanks again.

Look at my last posting above, If using XP - under EDITED:

You should only have to do the first part - check after its done. Your shouldn't have to do the "Disable Administrative shares".

Sorry but for some reason I thought you had Vista, which the first instructions related to.

Well, I'm feeling despondant. I worked my way through all of that, Wainui, with the exception of "Create user accounts" (I don't want a new account - just want to use Everybody) and situation doesn't change. I still can't see the shared folders from the desktop PC on the desktop PC.

Just an aside - a couple of days ago - when I was first having problems with this I deleted the original Shared Folders on the desktop pc. Prior to doing that when I 'unshared' the Shared Folders - they remained in My Network Places (although they were theoretically not there). I wonder if that is what has stuffed this process up - or do you think it is something else???

I'm assuming you mean the shared folders in C:\Documents and Settings\all users\shared Documents ?

Remaining in Network places, they somtimes show there until the next reboot.

Try this since you have XP Pro , wont work for XP Home, Can't do a screen shot as I'm working on a XP HM PC now.--

1.Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
2.On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3.Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.)

The XP Pro Machines I have share fine with this unticked, what ever yours is, do the oppersite, if its unticked tick it, if its ticked untick it. Reboot (man what a mouth full, say that fast )

    Wainui - you're brilliant!

That sorts out both the My Network Places, and the wireless networking problems.

    I have more problems...

But I will give everyone a rest (including myself) for the moment.

    I'll be back - and thanks a lot - I'm grateful.

Phew - I was running short of ideas. If that didn't work it would have been time to really have to think harder for solutions.

( Bold in your Post) - NEXT

As I always say - computers are only electronics and code - what can possibly go wrong - Gotta have some fun - Hell you would go nuts other wise.
