    Default Can laptops be traced?

I got a laptop from a friend for quite cheap. Suspiciously cheap. He says he got it from his father, whose friend recently died. I'm giving them the benefit of a doubt, and bought it anyway.

I'll use the laptop for my uni, but when the time comes for me to sell it, can some number on the laptop lead it to its owner, if the laptop had indeed been stolen?

The serial number would identify the computer ...

A laptop with no serial number would automatically be suspect. The sundry stuff tucked away on the disk would also be indicative, and Microsoft's records might be useful to prove that someone else activated the OS. The original vendor might keep records of the unique OS validation number.

The laptop would have to come to the attention of the police in some way, and the theft would have to have been reported.

Well if its got a serial # etc on it and someone notified the Police.

    That it was stolen

When you try and sell it (depending on WHERE you sell it - ie: Trademe).

That may depend on whether they get notified of stolen goods.

Before people put it on the site, to sell it.

Hmmm I think I'll return it. I don't know if I could trust this guy's dad.

Things like this have a way of unraveling at the wrong place and time.

A very good buddy, when he was much younger had a person of questionable...er..ethics.... sell him a 5-string Warwick Bass guitar...for a really REALLY good price.

Wanting to have that quality bass, he didn't ask the right questions and bought it anyway.

Fast forward about 27 years..he's playing in a very large orchestra as a professional bass player, and at a break another guitarist walks over to him and asks if he can see the Warwick.

Holding it up..he says: "Yup..this is my bass that got stolen from me over 20 years ago. Go ahead and keep it now..it's been too long to correct any wrongs and insurance payments...just use it well and don't ever sell it yourself".

That time it worked out OK..but you may not be so fortunate.

Yep, returned it.....I don't want to be stamped as a thief should the owner ever find me with the laptop in a very large orchestra as a professional show recorder.

    I mean, on trademe.....

Oh for the good old days of XTGold.

Great editing tool and also bringing files back from the dead, as long as there hadn't been any saving to drives.

Workmate had lost her wages password under one of the propriety wage programs (this is MSDos days) and we managed to get it back through XTGold.

Also found out the propietor of the XTGold program, had been inserted as Saddam Hussien, believe it or not, if you will.

There are probably other editing programs today?.

XTree Gold lives on as ZTree and I use it to this day, having never found a program to beat it. Download it here.

It is a free download with nags, or a once only payment for life, and it is so good I paid for it. Best of all, you can email the developer and he will reply to you!

The only things missing are undelete, which you can add and configure yourself, and I think some image viewers that Irfanview does better anyway.

Rediscover the good old days, and then some!

    Cheers

I keep getting prompted to lodge my fingerprints on this laptop - a Toshiba. Guess I should really do so as it might stop, or at least, hold-up anyone who might steal it !

How cheap? It could be legit. Last year I bought a year old working 2nd hand lappie in mint condition for under $300 at auction in a deceased estate sale.
