PC Company recovery partition

I've got a crappy PC Company computer, with a recovery partition, that I want to use to restore the PC after a failed XP - SP2 update.

Any ideas how to get it to restore. I can see the partition with Knoppix, so I know it has a recovery partition and run thru a few F10, F12 combos at bootup with no luck.

first I ever heard of that .......all pc co comps I've seen just were supplied with a 'recovery cd' which was in fact simply an xp cd rebadged.......

I belive it's possible to use 'system restore' from the recovery console but i'm too lazy to find the info for you lol.......something about getting to c:........then exectuing restrui.exe ?......

Does it say what key to press on the post screen?

Maybe down the bottom right.

Fingers crosses, I've just got it going again, and manged to get into Add/Remove programs, and it's removing SP2 as we speak.

If it doesn't crash might work, but it's still a mystery on the repair partition.

May not be PC Company, theres a program in there called PC Depot help.

Maybe it's them.

Ditto - never seen a recovery partition yet on a PC company Computer - not to say they didn't later on before they closed - just never seen one. But they did have a rebranded XP CD, and usually another 1 or 2 CD's containing drivers / Software.

When you say

Knoppix should see a data /image file there , Does it show as having one ?

Drcspy - is this the command you were talking about in safe mode with command prompt : Run System Restore in Command Prompt

1. Boot into Safe mode with Command Prompt – Keep Pressing F8 at start-up then with the arrow keys select Safe mode with Command prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Press Enter.
Follow the instructions given to perform the System Restore process.

Knoppix shows it as a drive, so thats why I suspect that it is a partition, and there are files in there such as Autoexec.bat and restore, thats what makes me think it's a recovery partition.

(And check this out ... I went to Google PC Depot after I made the previous post, and Google had already picked this post up, after three minutes. That's some spidering.)

yeh..........but i was under the impression you could run it from recovery console

and poster #1 sorry but I thought you couldn't even get to windows ......otherwise i'd have suggested 'add remove progs' also....

Have you tried F11. Most of the pcs at my work have a separate partition for recovery and restore. All I do is just hit F11 as the pc starts and it goes into the IBM restore and recovery screen and I just follow the options from there. Also try hitting "Enter" as the pc boots.
