Default Can't print to network printer

    Hi all,

I'm not sure whether this problem has happenned to you but I'm totally puzzled by it. Both the main office computer and the laptop next door used to print work fine with the network printer in the main office, until last Saturday. when all of a sudden nothing sent from the laptop to the printer got printed. Even now (after some three hours of trying everything), I can't print a single thing from the laptop now. The main office and the laptop simply do not see eye to eye.

Both the main office computer & the laptop connect to the main printer in the office via a D-Link ADSK Router (DSL-504). The main office computer is prints fine.

But the laptop and the main office printer is something else. So here's what I've done so far:

    1. I've copied all the settings, IP addresse, port configurations, etc from the main office computer and load them on the laptop; everything is identical now from the type of printer, rpinet driver and printer settings.

    2. When I ping the printer's IP addresses from the laptop (ping 10.1.1.200) it comes back fine. The ipconfig also works fine.

    2. I've checked the network cable from next the laptop to the printer and it's ok, in fact I can still surf the net and use the email on the laptop.

    3. And I haven't loaded any new programs lately that may've caused any problem.

What else should I do? Any suggestion will be much appreciated. Thanks.

The printer is a proper network printer? (With an ethernet port on it). What make/model is the printer?

What method do you use to 'add' the printer?

Which OS is the PC with the printing problems running?

just had a similar case with 4 office PC's out of the 6 the customer has suddenly not printing to a stand alone business Printer. Could ping etc. The printer was a sharp.

Problems were - user numbers for page count / costing didn't match and the print setting needed to be change to LP not RAW.

What make /model is the printer?

    Kfoffice,
N.B. You may want to remove your street address from your "Location".

Try using Networkmagic to set your network up again, easier than trying to figure it out the hard way

Have you checked the printer to make sure it hasnt run out of toner? Some networks printer at my workplace stop printing once the toner reaches 15%.. once i change the toner, it starts prinitng normally. This might not be your issue but worth a look.

    Have seen a simalar problem.
Turned out to be a faulty port on a network switch.

Have you disconnected the power to your router and plugged back in again?
Also have you tried connecting your laptop into a different port on your router?
Plug your laptop into the main office network lead, this will tell if your laptop is the cause.

Basically use a process of elimination.

Thanks everyone for your replies unfortunately I'm still unable to print from the laptop. I downloaded Network Magic, installed and ran it but still couldn't fix the problem.

The network printer I'm using is a Sharp AR-M276 PCL6. It has an ethernet socket on the side and is currently connected to the router via an ethernet cable.

When I ping the printer's IP address: 10.1.1.200 from the laptop it comes back with:
Reply from 10.1.1.200 bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255 (then four more lines of exactly the same message underneath the first line).
So the printer is obviously responding but......I don't know why it won't print.

I've re-checked the printer drivers, etc but still to no avail. Any more suggestions? thanks

    Answer all the questions asked...

What operating system are you running?

You will want to delete the printer from the PC in question and add it again, making a TCP/IP Port for the printer. I assume thats how you did it before, if you don't know how to , ask away.

It would be really nice to know which OS your running on the lappy though.

BINGO - similar printer to the problems my customer had. Theirs is a sharp 2700N
    Fixed that worked:
Go into the settings : cant remember exact location but I know them when I see them.

Try this - make sure the ip address was ip-10.1.1.200 < (IP you supplied)

I think its on the port settings - go to ports / tcp/ip configure> See if if its set to LPR then lr in the port name ( i think its called).

If you have user control - make sure the user numbers / names actually match what they are meant to be.

Try a default of 00000 if unsure. If the user numbers / names dont match then the printer refuses to print, the PC sends the print job - it goes through the motions but nothing happens.
The user control on the Printer has to be reset sometimes on the printers menu / panel then the matching numbers entered in the persons PC.

The main two problems I had were the LPR was not selected and the user numbers didn't match what was on the PC's > Printer. Altered those and all printers printed fine - nothing to do with drivers.

Just remembered - the setting you are needing I think you right click the printer > properties> ports> tcp/ip >configure port.

The user details are in a tab I think in Printing Prefs > job Handling
