    Default PC Locking up

Got a problem where my pc is locking up, and the only way to get it going again is to press the restart button. Ctrl alt del doesnt work.

I thought it might be a memory problem... Ran memtest86 for 2 successful runs, with no errors, but then it locked up, so I didn't run any more than that.

It locked up twice when I was playing Unreal Tournament with my brother across the LAN.

How can I go about testing to find what exactly the problem is?

If the memtest froze, thats definitley indicating hardware. I'd run it through again, lots of times. Have you got one or two or more sticks of RAM? Swap them out, try testing them one at a time. Have you triede a hard reset of the BIOS? Probably won't help matters, but it can't hurt.

Doubt it, if it was a memory error it would have locked up during the test. Sounds more like a heat issue, ifs its happening mainly in games its sounds like a video card issue. Otherwise check to make sure all the fans are dust free and the heatsinks are mounted correctly.

It did lock up during the test. Maybe i wasn't clear. I left the test on, and it completed 2 successful runs before locking up. 0 errors were found.... but it did lock up during the memory testing

the first thing i normally try is to fit a good known power supply.

90% of hardware faults are PSU related.
    Tweak it till it breaks

Boot up the machine leave it in the bios. Preferably on the screen that shows system temps.

When it dies you will know its the power supply or overheating or both.

if it runs 6 hours or whatever. Then boot it up properly and load something like speedfan that shows cpus temps. The run STRESS ORTHOS that will bring it to its knees

Just after a lockup, all the temperatures were around 40, and the graphics card at 60

    Check for bad connections

I had an old slot 1 celeron that would hard lock for seemingly no reason, turned out the CPU was slightly loose, re seating it fixed the problem.

Yours could also be PSU, have you tried another?
Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.

Don't have any other psu to try. Reseating the CPU sounds like a bit of fun

doubt it is your cpu mejo, agent was using that as an example....i would say its a driver issue...especially if during a game, or perhaps the ram....
