    Default My Computer icon wrong

    Hello ppl.

    When I added a second hard drive to pc, it has come up
    as a optical drive icon in "My Computer", as can be seen in this screenshot (250GB:F)...

    http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/MyCo...screenshot.JPG

    I cant figure out why it has done this, but would like to replace with normal icon as I don't have a clue on how to. Normally left clicking to bring up options and changing icons is possible, but left clicking the drive icon brings up properties of the drive, with no option to change icon.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

    If you've got a nVidia card running, it is changeable to any one of many.

    Goto: nView PROPERTIES and choose what you want or you can do the following:

    1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose "Properties".

    2. When the "Display Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Desktop" tab.

    3. Click the "Customize Desktop" button.

    4. A "Desktop Items" dialog box will appear. Make sure the "General" tab is selected.

    5. Click on an icon to change:

    * My Computer
    * My Documents
    * My Network Places
    * Recycle Bin (full)
    * Recycle Bin (empty)

    6. Click "Change Icon".

    7. If you like one of the available icons, choose one and click "OK". Or, you can browse your system for more icons including those you may have downloaded from the Internet. You can also use the icons embedded in executable files, DLLs, etc.

    For a bunch of icons, enter this next to the "Browse" button and press ENTER:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

    8. Click "OK" on the dialog boxes to close them.

    Note 1: If you want to create your own icons, here is a list of editors for informational purposes only.

    Easy Icon Maker - http://www.icon-maker.com/

    IconCool - http://www.iconcool.com/

    Microangelo - http://www.microangelo.us/

    Note 2: If you don't like your changes, you can revert a Windows XP desktop icon back to its default.

    I haven't used any of those sites for a long time..so I cannot vouch for their safety right now.

    A good idea to use "Site Adviser" for Firefox to check them out first.

    Thank you for your advice Joe, and those links were interesting, but its the icon for the hard drive (F) when I open up "My Computer".
    Its icon is a optical drive icon when its supposed to be a hard drive icon. I am probably being picky I guess.

    Does F open??

    What is F?? IDE? SATA? External?

    If IDE, what else is on the same ide cable? Anything else?

    If you go into the BIOS, what does the BIOS detect F as?

    You can change the Registry to make that Icon what ever you want.

    My Normal Icons for USB drives are - well Normal look at This Site on how to change the reg key.

    The changed Drive is Drive E to a icon called Bluh.

    Just to show what you can do see Here Before and After

    As it says in the Page above I had to create the file in the reg, every thing was OK untill I got to Explorer, tehn had to create the new folders. Your folder Name for the Drive would be F See Here for folder struture. Make a restore point first BEFORE editing the REG if you do it this way.

    The default location for windows Icons is C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll -But you may need aprogram to Extract XP Icons you want unless you download some free ones.

    Its a internal SATA drive.
    I have two, first one is partitioned into C and D drive, and second is just unpartitioned F drive. Both are 250GB SATA.
    I'm off to work now so ill look at bios tomorrow morning when I get home.

    Thanks Wainuitech,
    Followed the links to get the directions to registry address for icons
    then simply deleted the default icon for F drive.
    Presto, the icon in "My Computer" explorer changed to what it should be.
    Thanks.
