Depends on the size - 19" are usuaully 1440x900, 22" are usuaully 1680x1050.....it could also depend on the brand, some have a recommended resolution which may be lower than the max.

It'll look proper on 1440*900 Rob. Get some wide-screen wallpapers too. They are fantastic

Here is also brilliant if you're into fractal wallpapers. You need to jump through a couple of hoops before you can D/L them (apparantly to stop people hotlinking the wallpaper-size images) but the result is well worth it.

It also varies on the quality of the wide screen. On one of the dell laptops I was looking at last week had two different qualities of screens at 14.1 inchs, one was 1280 by 800 and the other 1440 by 900.

Hey I don't actually own a wide screen myself, but how do games go when it comes to wide screens, are the wide screen resolutions supported well or do you have to screw the screen up with 1024 by 768 or something like that.

The proper resolution is its native resolution, which will vary depending on the manufacture and size. My 20-inch is 1680 x 1050. Get the highest resolution available/you can afford.

There's a good chart of display resolutions at wikipedia (obviously)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Video_Standards.svg

If your screen is at the highest resolution you can set it to and it doesn't look right then you probably need new graphics drivers, or possibly display drivers. I know that when ever I plug my notebook into the 24" and do an update, it grabs the display drivers for that model.

Screen resolutions are funny aye. I still remember only a couple of years ago thinking 1024x768 was optimal screen resolution. Now I wince when I see it in use and occasionally use it (usually in RD situations or while running XP in VPC/Parallels). Nowadays I'm using at least 1400x1050 (notebook), but mostly at nice and wide 1920x1600 (external monitor for notebook or 24" iMac at work).
