    Default Can't repair XP pro

Tonight I cannot boot my main PC. Have authentic Windows XP pro. I see the BIOS and then the XP startup screen. After about 5secs I get a flash of a BSOD and then a reboot process. This just repeats itself. I have tried my CD to recover. If I choose the preferred ‘Enter’ option then at the next screen I do not get the option to repair. If I choose the R option the PC simply keeps rebooting as before. I have tried bootcfg /rebuild after removing the attributes from the boot.ini file and then deleting it. This isn’t working as I get a corrupt file system message – which I already know about. Stuck………..

I don't mean to ask a dumb question but can you get to the boot menu options (F8 before windows splash screen), if you can have you tried Last Known good? if that fails then try going to safe mode command prompt, and try chkdsk /f x3 and chkdsk /R 2x this will take a while but has done some really great get out of jail free tricks for me.

Thanks. Can't boot into safe mode. Can't boot into LKG either. Can't get cmd prompt unless I use a Win98 boot floppy. Already tried the other options but without the /f or /r - doing that now.......

Have you added any new Hardware recently? Maybe a hardware conflict is causing your BSOD?

Nope - thought of that and for good measure I've unplugged all I can to avoid any conflict. My guess is that 'somehow' a file[s] has become corrupt and I am having a hard time repairing that file[s]. I have a SATA HD and am thinking of installing a 2nd SATA [just happen to have one] with a fresh XP install. And then hoping I can use that to boot and see my data on the original [now corrupt] HD. What do you think?

Once done like that you should be able to take ownership of the files when the old root drive becomes pos1 slave.

Don't use CS or cable select when you do it though!

10 hrs later I'm stumped. Tried and read everything I can to no avail. However, I did install a fresh OS on the 2nd SATA and can see the partition on the original drive but I cannot access my files on there. Stuck again...........Please !

Well it wont have MA/SL/CS since it's SATA not IDE.

Try another SATA cable on the dead one and power.

It sounds like the dead SATA is connected but there's no power or the cable is stuffed. Since you can see the partition.

Where are you seeing the partition on the old SATA? In disk management or my computer?

Thanks Speedy. 26 hrs later {2hrs sleep] I am still trying. I'm stuffed I'll tell you.

You said: Well it wont have MA/SL/CS since it's SATA not IDE.

    What does MA/SL/CS mean?

I can see the partitions {i have 4} in both places you mention.

Latest success is that i repaired the boot.ini file with bootcfg / rebuild and all was looking mych better until I now have a kernel32.exe error message. Currently reading all I can find and tring 'stuff' to fix that. I have tried this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477 but get an 'access denied' message when I try copy.

The 'old sata' is fune I'm sure.

    It just goes on.............

I was replying to Surferjoe's reply.
