Default XP networked folder slow to open.

I have a small network with 4 Desktops using Ethernet and 2 laptops on a wireless connection. One of the desktops has a 100g partition with all the shared folders on it.
One of the frequently used folders is slow to open with the searching torch running when this folder is selected; it is about 500mb in size with 2500 odd mainly TIF files in it.
I have looked at MS knowledge articles which mostly want you to hack the reg,are there any simple things to do to speed things up a bit.
    Thanks for any info,
    John.

Is it up to date? With SP2?

    What about firewalls?

And which ones the slowest? The ethernet or wireless?

And whats the wireless running in? b or g?

    hey Speedy,

All PC's sp2,zonealarm free is the firewall,I havent tested with the laptops to keep wireless speed out of the mix,I have been testing the newest PC on ethernet via the network to the PC with the shared files on it which means only looking at wired speed at the moment,
    cheers,
    John.

Is Zonealarm installed on both PC's with the Ethernet, or is it on all PC's??

    Or just one PC?

Have u configured ZA for the network?

I hope you're not sharing all of the main hdd?

How are the 2 PC's by ethernet connected? With a hub or a crossover cable?

Zonealarm on all of the PC's,
I have configured ZA to allow IP range,
One thing I am not using is a fixed IP address on any of the PC's,
No I am not sharing the whole drive,I have mapped the folder on each PC,everything is in the one place, the slow folder is only one of many folders.
the PC's are wired via a 4 port switch which is part of the wireless access point (D-Link DI-824VUP+).
    cheers,
    John

Did u use the Network Wizard (whatever its called), in ZA to add the ip/s, not add the IP's yourself?

The fixed IP's shouldnt be a prob. As long as theyre getting on the net.

If theyre configured to get on the net.

It sounds like the workgroup names are the same, its just the speed thats the prob.

What was this registry hack u were talking about? Got a site?

Cheers for the trouble you are going to Speedy,
I tried to do a test run of the first one (kb 829700) on a PC here at home but couldnt find the SCAPI folder under explorer for the last step of the XP reg hack.it also gave me problems with regedit.exe going bad and I had to fix it.

and this one to tidy up the shared folders

Umm how are u copying the files??

By opening the shared folder and copying and pasting the files??

From one PC to the other?

What I do between the 2 PC's here, is use the send to option (right mouse when u highlight a file and send it to the other PC here (and vice versa).

You could try this, (thats if u dont mind sending whatever file/s, from one to the other (to one folder only). Are u only sharing a / one folder on each PC, or more folders?

Go to start/run and type in sendto

Right mouse in the folder / new / shortcut. Type in the path of the folder u shared on each, (or click on browse / my network places and select the folder).

And give each shortcut a name. See if it makes copying any faster.

Whatever folders u have just entered will appear when u go to whatever folder, select the file/s and select the send to option.

You arent copying programs (to whatever PC), that has already been installed are you?

As it wont work on the PC you copied it to. Well not properly anyway.

Speedy its nothing fancy, there is a folder on the network shared by 3 other PC's and 2 laptops, the problem is when you open this often used folder using a XP PC it takes a while,if it was opened by a Win 98se network it would be faster, there is some setting in XP thats not in 98 that slows down files sharing,is it some thing to do with TCIP against NETBEUI.
not too sure how this all works,
    cheers,
    John,

I'd check the folder view. If it is set to 'icons' it may be trying to open each tif file for the icon. This would slow it down. Try setting to 'details' and see if there is any difference.
