Default Lets build a PC (FEB 2007)

Alrighty folks, In light of the usual "What should I buy" and associated arguing that follows I thought we could have a thread where as anyone can post a configuration that they would recommend. The idea more then anything is to identify which items on the market offer the best bang for buck.

The guidelines (in order to stop try hards posting million dollar systems, Lets keep it real)

System has to be current, Built to run Vista though software can be excluded from the system.

A certain level of quality is expected, No crap parts

A certain level of "don't be a knobend" is expected, No need to list an LCD worth $1500, A terabyte drive or any Apple gear.

The system is for family use, It will be used for gaming so must be capable but not expected to run the latest system killing game at 2024x966.

Thats all, The above guidelines can of course be ignored, They are quite meaningless.Muhahahaha.

Show your hand folks, and it cant hurt to say why you list a certain product, be it brand, price, capabilities etc etc etc.
    better Dredd then dead

You have just about specified the PC I want to replace my aging PIII550 Metla, including the less-than full-on gaming requirement. Only real deviations are that I want a Lian-Li V1000 case (because it fits my available space and I like it), and I want three hard drives , one for OS & programs, two for data in Raid format so that one can die and the other is still there.

I shall watch this thread with great interest, because I am largely (make that totally) ignorant of the ancient art of computer building.

    Cheers

Floppy drive is a bit over kill
Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.

well these are my specs for the computer i built for myself..

LISTEN PEOPLE, WHEN BULIDING YOUR OWN COMPUTER, REMEMBER IT STARTS WITH A GOOD MOTHERBOARD!! YOU NEED A GOOD MOTHERBOARD
THAT WILL BE READY FOR TOMORROWS TECHNOLOGY!!!

    see through side case
    500 watt power supply
    2 xfx 6800xtstream NVIDIA-SLI video cards
ASUS premium SLI-A8N motherboard with fanless desighn with ALL PCI-EXPRESS
2.10 AMD ATHLON processor with AIbooster for easy overclock
2 dual layer dvd LITEON rw drives
    floppy drive
    2gig ram

VERY POWERFULL MACHINE!! AND CAN HANDLE ANYTHING!!

and my suggestion to others.... stay away from dell, and steer clear of intel, intel processors are weak and very bad for gaming....

I don't give a stuff about tomorrows technology.
Today's technology is where it's at.
By the time tomorrow comes your "future proofed M/B will probably be superceeded anyway.
