Here's the problem....
Remember when VHS and BetaMax slugged it out some year ago?
Well, believe it or not, it was the porn industry that tipped the scales in favor of VHS because of the clout they have and the sheer massiveness of materials that they produced. It made Sony's BetaMax DOA..much to the chagrin of people who recognized a really superior system...Ah well....
Fast forward to today and it's deja vu all over again...
The debate over BluRay and HD-DVD is all but gaveled closed.
Sony has the short stick again and HD-DVD is the clear winner as the porn industry has spoken!
If you'll pardon the pun, there may be something more shaking and moving here.....
Adult movie producer Digital Playground says it's going with HD-DVD because Sony won't allow XXX movies on Blu-ray and will lift the license of any replicator who goes astray.
Interestingly, last spring Digital Playground was vocal in its support of Blu-ray for its greater capacity and its presence in the PlayStation 3 game console, so whatever it ran up against must have been a serious deal-breaker.
There's no confirmation that Sony is in fact enforcing a no-smut policy, but if it is, Sony must know it's putting itself at a disadvantage.
Intelligent people who would buy a machine that records DVD's will probably wait until the war is over since by then the prices of the winner's machines will have dropped.
The winner this time is probably going to be the best format since factors other than cute names determine who wins this battle.
The BetaMax format had better resolution and a smaller tape cartridge than VHS.... it wasn't quality but cost that tipped the scales that time. The porn industry was trying to leverage the most bang for it's buck and got it.
Oh, and if you ask the obvious of whether the upgrade to high-def porn is worth it?
Seems Digital Playground's head man, known simply as Joone, says absolutely.
"People, especially who have never seen high definition, are blown away by it," he says.
"With adult material, when people are having sex in high definition, it feels like they're in your living room, close to the action."
...and there ya go!
