Default OEM Software - What is the catch?

With vendors of so-called OEM software selling it at a 10th of the shop price, what is the catch? eg http://www.wallouter.com

    Is it a legal copy?
Does it qualify for Microsofts numerous patches and fixes?

I was brassed off a year ago to have paid the full price for XP professional, only to find that I had to download approx 40MB in fixes on a brand new product. Fortunately we had just been able to get broadband.

Sorry about your having to update once you got the system installed at home...but that's the way it is.

Baddies and malware are updating 24/7, and no matter when you get that puter home, it's gonna be outdated as to the most recent mods and security hacks to keep it safe.

You have to become pretty much an IT expert if you want to run Windows anything...it's the way it is, like I said.

This isn't knocking M$, but just the truth. I try to run a little XP and some Mepis, (a Linux replacement for the better as I believe) when I can.

The learning curve is steep for both of them for a noob, but if you can try to learn Windows, you can expend the same energy on Linux-based systems too.

    Some generally accepted rules:

Don't use Internet Explorer..even the NEW one
DO use Firefox as your default browser.
Get some good anti-stuff..notice I did not mention McAfee, Norton, Symantec....they are all process hogs and will cripple your system. Perhaps if you put 5 gig of RAM into your mobo..er, no.

Stay on this site and lurk for a while..interjecting as you see or need fit, and try to learn what's going on and what's acceptable and what breaks and causes heartaches and broken systems.

If something's cheap..REALLY CHEAP...it is probably a risky option to buy it...force the temptation out of your mind. Stay away from Vista until a year or so passes for them to get some of the bugs and security holes repaired.

Remember that Vista is a total write of new code...not an extension of NT like all the other permutations of Windows is/was. The old stuff never got totally fixed...what makes you think a totally new system is gonna be any better?

Millions on millions lines of code are as yet untried and untested in the real world. Don't buy the smoke and mirrors from Mr. Bill...he also advertised that XP was going to be the most secure and safe OPSYS...EVER!!!! Was it?

The beta versions all have troubles...I personally don't think Vista should be released for another 10 years or so...look at the learning curve for the older systems that are still not fixed!

BTW: This: Microsoft Virtual PC 7 on that site you linked, is it not the same one that is now free from M$? I think so..and they want $39.96 for it...Hmmmmmmmm!

That site is selling pirated software, end of story.

It is run out of Russia (Moscow) so is outside the laws, but Windows validation would catch you fairly quickly if you tried to use a copy bought from there.

As above, if it's too good to be true, its not true.

Genuine OEM is a little cheaper, the only downside is that the licence means it is married to the PC you first load it on, and it dies with that PC.

What about all the OEM and system builder copies of things like Nortons etc on Trademe?
$35 is pretty cheap for the latest version, how is that legal?
Has to go with the new PC dosn't it?
