Default Toyota Hiace fault light problem.

    Hi,
I have a 1995 Toyota Hiace Super Custom 3.0 Turbo Diesel Auto 100,000km.

There is a warning light in red, at the bottom right of the control panel. The
symbol looks like a person sitting with a seatbelt on with a red circle in
    front.

A guy managed to interrogate the computer. Apparently it didnt come up with any fault codes just a code translating as" Air bag fault light ON" which it is.

Does any one know what the fault with the air bag would be, how to clear or reset the "Air bag fault light"?

    Thanks
    Paul

Wouldn't have the foggiest how to get rid of the light, but I thought airbags had to be changed after 10 years. And if I am correct, the 10 years are up on that airbag.

sounds like the seatbelt light. connect the drivers seat belt and test the switch.
    Tweak it till it breaks

I am not aware of any 10 year "lifetime" on airbags, but the indication is that there may be a fault with the electronics associated with the airbag system (and the sensors are all over the vehicle, so its not a simple task). Some airbags on passenger sides of cars can be disabled (to prevent injury to small children if they activate) and I would expect that to bring up a warning.

However I would like to see any links supergran has regarding a 10 year life, as our present car has 8 airbags (9 if SWMBO is in the car?), and the replacement cost of these in 10 years would mean the car has a negative value at that time.

LTSA have no requirement as to 10 year replacement that I can find, so I am intrigued.

Close all the windows, turn off the van, turn the van back on, open all the windows. If it doesn't work, try doing it again.

    Just kidding....

Take it to a large empty field & run like hell. That is the Self Destruct timer light. PJ

Now I am older, I listen but cannot hear.

If it is not broke, don't make it broker by trying to make it better. (This applies specifically to PJ)

I've had a couple of Toyota/Lexus cars in both cases a sign on top of the drivers sun visor warned that airbags had a 10 year life and must be services/replaced at that stage. Both were NZ new. Could be a conspiricy but may be something in it

The pyrotechnic gas generator will have a specified life time. Since it's a safety item, it would be conservatively set.

Modern cars aren't meant to be used for more than 10 years anyway. They want you to buy a new car, not replace any bits.
