Default I have stopped shopping at Foodtown because ...

This dispute and the way the Australian-Run business is treating it's NZ workers has put me right off them now.

I am sure a lot of people will still shop there, but this arrogant attitude to their workers is making me arrogant towards them. What happens when the rest of their supermarket workers don't get what they want either and lock them out too!

What happened to mediation and compromise. Simply saying "No you can't have that" and that is the end of it, is not good negotiating. Oh well they are only NZ'ers, (lower than Tassies) they still got our Bledisloe Cup, let them suffer, seems to be their attitude.

I am sure there is more to it than that. But in the meantime, while this dispute is unresolved, I will shop elsewhere.

Wow this post is identical to the one on gpforums
I believe no problem is so large or so difficult that it can't be blamed on someone else.

so, as I understand it, workers want more money, bosses say no you cant have it. workers strike, bosses say "strike then, we dont care, we wont pay you more for not working"

where's the issue? if you cant get paid what you want at foodtown, work elsewhere. if all foodtown employees used this attitude foodtown would be forced to increase wages or suffer staff shortages. and if they still found staff, well then everyone is better off.

furthermore, if foodtown employee no. 234 cant find another job, perhaps obtaining some form of education beyond 5/6th form would be advantageous...

and i doubt being aussie run has much to do with it...
personally I dont go to foodtown anyway, I prefer to shop at pak'n'save for one simple reason: same product, lower price.
When it comes to computers there is a difference to what you need and what you want, the former being less than half the price of the latter.

Not all workers are bright and everyone has various levels of intelligence, capability and skills. This is why people are paid at different levels.

So, if you are dumb, you deserve what you get, welcome to serfdom. Sheeshh , I thought people were better than that.

    Hear, Hear Motorbyclist.
I smell old-fashioned trade union practices here.
I thought nation-wide agreements went out a decade or so ago.
And they've found a convenient bogey-man in an Aussie-owned company.
Everytime I see it on the news, I smile at the gullibility of those supermarket workers being manipulated by their union. And they're so serious about it!!

Foodtown used to, dunno if they still, hire the intellectually handicapped. They hire older woman too.
And how many places are willing to hire these sorts of people? Wait till you're old and see how much use you past quals and experience is.

gullible? maybe. hopeful? yes. then again, most people will listen if you promise money

and serfdom seems to be better than communism, in my opinion (communism would only work in an utopian society, in which people really were all born and raised equal). I never said that dumb people should be paid less. I say people who do less should be paid less. If you happen to have wagged 90% of school and subequently failed (not implying foodtown workers are stupid, this is just an example), whose fault is that? certainly it's not your future employer's is it?

i guess what i'm trying to say is education is rather important to acheive above minimum wage.

edit: i'll agree, being old/handicapped isnt anyones fault, brownie points to foodtown for hiring such people

So what's wrong with old fashioned trade union practices. Better than the dod-eat-dog mentality engendered by those pseudo-socialists in the NZ labour Party in the '80s.
I've stopped shopping at Woolworth's while the lock-out continues.
