Default Laptop Not umm, not finding umm ........

OK .. more room here to explain whats happening.
In the morning I turn on laptop and go online, later I disconnect it for maybe an hour or so, closing all pages. When I reconnect, I cannot get any internet explorer pages up. When I click on the desktop for outlook express, the lil timer turns round and round and it stops, and nothing happens. I wait for ages, then I decide to turn it all off and start again.
When I disconnect the internet, all the pages Ive asked for come up, and the computer wont turn off via the start button

So I have to crash it

    Wat say you all ......................................

Oooo um running xp pro ..

DANGER is what I would say, do a lot of scans to ensure nothings on your PC other than that Im a pc n00b....

Im sure these guys will have more than a "general" thing to do. But do a virus scan, hopefully with a paid one and a free one, then a spy/adware scan then something like windows deffender...

Hopefully that finds and fixes the problems

You are not alone, Lovalee. Two threads have just been created recently on almost the same problem:

    http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?t=72289

    http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?t=72101

Maybe it would be wise to keep track of other threads as well. What did you mean by you can't turn off the computer via Start button? Is it that it is not-clickable? It would be good to post us a HijackThis log.

    Cheers

    This entry looks suss

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Error Safe Free] C:\Program Files\ErrorSafe Free\uers.exe /scan

    As stated here

I would uninstall this program and tick this entry above.

These entries dont have to be in startup either.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\bin\jusched.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe" -quiet

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Error Safe Free] C:\Program Files\ErrorSafe Free\uers.exe /scan

Tick the above entries tick fix checked then reboot.

I would also do a scan with Spybot and I would also install some kind of firewall.

    Thanks Speedy

Now ive removed those things in hjt, Ive downloaded and run spybot, it found 60 entries, I removed them, turned it off and on again.

Outlook opened ok ... clicked on IE on desktop and nothing!

So I opened an email and clicked on a link, and as that window opened, so did the one i requested off the desktop.

This has been going on for some months now, and we have just got sick of it!!

    What next ?

    Leigh
