    Default Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone

    Hi Team

I need to get few CCs of MEK for some product testing I am doing.

Can anybody suggest an Auckland source that sells MEK, or some common users in industry who might fill a small bottle for me? Do printers use MEK?

    Cheers

I was so excited at the beginning when I see the word "methyl-ethyl-ketone", thinking that this thread was about some chemistry problem.

Sorry for contributing unhelpful post to this thread, Billy T.

Try some printers or ink suppliers they will have it, just make sure you are in a well ventilated room when using it.
also known as dry ink remover.
Nova inks and chemicals or Flint ink

    Thanks Plod

I'll do the rounds of my local printers with en eyedropper in my hand! I only need to use one or two tiny droplets and after that any spare will be kept in my supply of "Solvents useful for repairing plastic".

I won't be inhaling any either, I use a paintbrush cleaner that is 35% Xylene, 35% Naptha petroleum (whatever that is) and 20% MEK, and the fumes from that brew would blow your head off, it is a real intoxicant.

    Cheers

You will probably find dimethyl ketone otherwise known as acetone will do the same job and is more easily available, from memory its a bit more volatile than MEK.

By the way naphtha is the correct spelling!!

I already have acetone, that is another of the substances I am using to test.

According to the world at large (google can produce great statistics just by checking hit counts) 82% spell it naphtha, and 18% spell it naptha, including the makers of the paint brush cleaner!

However in NZ, 53% spell it naptha and only 47% spell it naphtha.

    Go figure!

    Cheers

Can you advise how you used Google to get those figures please?

Google the words and compare the number of hits seems the obvious way.

Billy, the uni might have some, if you go to a chem lab and ask nicely.

    Hi Greg

roddy_boy hit it in one. I just enter the word into Google and count the hits. For this spelling I compared the whole of web result with the NZ only result.

I use this to get indicative statistics on all sorts of things, but mostly preferred spellings.

Take from it what you will, but the following is a quick comparison of colours:

    World:____ NZ:
    1 white___ white
    2 black___ green
    3 red_____ black
    4 green___ red
    5 blue____ blue
    6 yellow___ brown
    7 brown___ yellow
    8 orange___ orange
    9 purple___ purple

The prominence of green for NZ is not surprising.

    Cheers

Thanks. I was searching through Google's tools and couldn't find one that did it.
