Default strange internet issue on new laptop, network issue?

I spent my entire saturday setting up a family member's new laptop

2 hours installing plus rest of day swearing

the internet didnt work in the afternoon, but did in the morning, and using another network

    story as follows

everything went fine, i installed avast antivirus, adaware, spybot, office 2003, ccleaner etcetc

whilst doing so i set the network up, decided to leave the bundled software on the machine and browsed the internet. updates for programs went smoothly.

then, after reinstalling windows media player 10 (accidentally removed it whilst adding solitaire etc through Confiure Windows Components thingy, cant be bothered dloading mp11 at this point) problems arised

the laptop had a shutdown issue in that it wouldnt. soon fixed however, as there was intructions in the manual for this (hold power button for 4 secs)

once rebooted, i upgraded office to sp2. by now all the windows updates were done.

    then the internet died.

other computers on the network worked fine, i tried wireless and wire to no avail.

i went to a neighbour's, internet worked fine on wireless and wire

most puzzled i tried assigning ip, changing internet settings, triple checking everything, running network setup wizard many times, all the troubleshooters i could find, swearing, threatening of violence, taking violence out on a 2hr session of farcry. decided problem MUST be in network as the laptop connects fine using neighbours network. i reset router/modem/laptop. then turned EVERYTHING off, then turned everything back on, lan, wan and wireless settings. ran out if ideas, and thought i'd sleep on it.... sleep doesnt seem to be working out too well lol

    any ideas?

Is your router using DHCP or static IPs?

Open up a command window (Start > Run > cmd) and enter in ipconfig

This will show all the network configurations. Compare that information with one of the working desktops on the same network ipconfig output. See if you can spot anything wrong that way.

I take it you have checked the firewall to make sure permission for the gateway is OK?

yes using dchp, and all systems are set to auto ip, but i tried with static on the laptop and had no luck. yes i have checked all firewall, even windows update is unable to connect/dload. the wireless at both networks is unsecured, so i cant see that as an issue

    i will recheck ipconfig shortly

yes all settings are identical, with the exeption of ip address on the network (obviously)

i can ping my dns server and get a response of around 60ms

anyone wanna lend an ip to ping?

Well, I've waited a day for someone else to ask...
By now it seems that it's up to me.

    Motorbyclist:
Why did you make a poll on one subject but add it to a question on something completely different?

There is nowhere to make comments on the poll.
Yours has limitations, as most do. Usually, the complaint is that particular favourites aren't included.

( I haven't made one, but as Tazz's recent excuse was that he only had 10 options, it seems you could've spread the net considerably wider than you bothered)
    .
Normally we can either discuss a poll or have a good old moan about its limitations.
Yours gives no opportunity for either.
It covers my own options, but I can hear others I know muttering about obvious exclusions...
These polls are never scientific. But why have you taken away the fun, leaving it merely boring?

I can be much more argumentative in the future. I have been secretly training in Mr. Metla's School Of Assertive Statements And Appplied Counterpunch Theory.

    Nah-
Already know your opinions on IE
Already know your opinions on Firefox.

Wanna have an opinion burst on why he didn't include any Linux browsers?

    Pot-boiling?
    Moi?
