    Well your method worked well for me today, minus the need for a torch. I had a LCD which looked like it was turned off, but still showed it was powered on. I took a close look at the screen and sure enough you could just make out the desktop icons etc on the dark screen.

    Which perhaps says more about Graham_L's eyesight than my diagnostic suggestions Jen?

    It appears to be very useful for cases where its uncertain if its the screen electronics or the backlight.
