outlook express opens when I click an email address in outlook

Help, I can't get rid of Outlook Express!!! Recently, for no particular reason that I can determine, my computer now wants to use outlook express whenever I click on an email address on a webpage or even from within Outlook's preview pane. I have never used Outlook Express for emailing and I don't want to start now. I have tried uninstalling Outlook Express (successfully as it disappears from the programs menu) but the problem persists. The only workaround is to select the email address, right click and chose copy then paste into the "to" field of a new message opened in Outlook. Anyone know how to solve this problem? I am using Outlook 2000 on a machine running Windows XP Home.

In Internet Explorer, make sure Outlook is selected as the default email program. It may exert control over Outlook I suspect.

IE - Tools - Internet Options - Programs - select Outlook in the E-mail: box. Apply.
