    Default Is this combination OK?

    Hi,

    I have heard that 2 or more Anti Viruses/Firewalls is not good.

    I just wanted to ask you people is this combination is ok, as I cant decide:

    -->Avast Home edition Anti Virus
    -->A Squared Free
    -->Spywareblaster
    -->Ad-Aware
    -->McAfee Personal Desktop Firewall (the blue shield with orange flame)
    -->Spybot-Search and Destroy

    Thanks. =).

    Anti-Viruses and Firewalls are not the same.

    AdAware and SpywareBlaster are good, as is Spybot (the Cadillac as far as I am concerned)

    McAfee is the bottom-feeder of the bunch..I hate it and will not use it as will not many of the people here on this site.

    As far as firewalls go, I run (here come the flames again) Microsoft's Defender Beta...and I like it.

    I am also behind a physical firewall in the form of a DSL router by Linksys.

    You can typically have the following:

    one physical firewall
    one software firewall
    a few different anti-spyware programs...you just have to cull out the bad ones that don't play well with the others.

    I run the following:

    Linksys Router (even if I was only using one computer)
    AVG Free
    Spybot S&D
    SpywareBlaster
    AdAware
    Microsoft's Defender
    Microsoft's Baseline Security Adviser (for testing purposes)
    Belarc Adviser (for testing and archiving keys and licenses)
    CCleaner (CrapCleaner for clearing out trails and tails and broken links)

    That combination is fine, though I haven't heard of or used McAfee Personal Desktop Firewall myself.

    Avast! is the anti-virus, McAfee Personal Desktop Firewall is the firewall and the others are spyware/adware detectors/preventers of which you can have as many as you like. In fact the more the merrier of those.

    LOL, SurferJoe doesnt use a software firewall obliviously and is okay with that being behind a router firewall, cause Windows Defender is NOT a firewall.

    I used to use Sygate Personal for about 4 yrs, not trialing Zonealarm.

    The security any firewall, whether it be hardware or software based, offers is dependent on the user inside the firewall.

    You are absolutely right...I have made this mistake before...I use the Windows Firewall in XP from the SP-2 patch......

    Sorry! I had brain fade there...but I meant no harm...and again, I use that FW as my only software one behind the router and haven't had an intrusion for quite a long time now.
