    Question Extended warranties for laptop

    Hi everyone

I recently purchased an ASUS laptop from DSE. It comes with a 2 year international warranty as standard, and I wish to expand this to three years. (I figure this is a good idea, since laptops are notoriously expensive to repair)

I did not purchase a warranty from DSE- I want an international one, and DSE's cover only covers NZ & Australia.

I rang up ASUS who were less than helpful- basically go to DSE (already did), or another supplier. I did this, but it was not specific to ASUS- just a generic insurance company, and I am wondering if there are a number of such companies out there, and if so, which ones are recommended or to be avoided?

Any help with this one would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Opinions?

Go to your insurance broker, thats what the broker is there for.

It's just insurance since you don't want the generic retailer offering, and yes there are lots of insurance companies out there...

But expect what you want to be a tad on the expensive side, I suspect it will be a few arms and legs more than a stock retailer cover.

Laptops are highly risky devices, they tend to get stolen a lot.
    Insurance (International) will reflect that.

Darn it, my broker can't help- doesn't offer any kind of warranties, but having said that, I requested a warranty rather than insurance... I figure my house insurance will cover it, since (ironically) it never leaves the house It wouldn't cover stuff breaking though which is what I want, so will hit the other shop tomorrow and grab what they have- it looks like its the only one on the market!

If it never leaves your house, then how is having the extended warranty restricted to NZ/Aus going to be an issue?

Your household contents cover will cover contents anywhere in NZ whilst temporary away from the home.

There's a difference between a warranty and a contract of insurance however.

A warranty will generally cover breakdowns that occur outside the manufacturer's standard period of cover. Bear in mind that NZ Law may also help you there anyway (Consumer Gurantees Act), a reason I personally do not go for any extended warranty.

An Insurance policy will generally cover you for accidental loss or damage of the laptop. They won't pay you anything if it simply breaks down. The cover may be limited though (age limit, basis of settlement - indemnity in some cases = market value, higher excess or limited to how much they will pay) as portable electronic devices are usually at a higher risk of loss or damage.

You may be able to arrange an 'insurance policy' that provides a warranty-type cover for failure, but they are generally sold by niche insurers who specialise in that sort of consumer product cover rather than mainstream insurers, and it's really just an extended warranty anyway, at higher prices.

So in summary, each product (warranty or insurance) has different purposes.

As commented earlier though, I cannot understand why you wanted an int'l warranty if it stays at home...

Bart's Dad Homer, if you wasn't going to go 'eewww' and hit me, I'ld kiss you! Thanks for that- darn it, why wasn't the ASUS 0800 number be this helpful? They told me nothing about this at all!

Whoops, sorry Jester & somebody, I forgot to mention that I may be moving overseas in the next 2-3 years - thinking about spending more time with family back in the UK!

I know that theft is covered by my insurance, what I wanted was breakdown cover- laptop bits are very expensive to replace...

Hi all, I suddenly realised that I forgot to tie up this thread.

I rang ASUS, got through to the same guy who only a few weeks before told me that he knew nothing about warranties and that they couldn't be purchased after 30 days ownership anyway. Again explained the situation and referred his attention to the website.

After much faffing about, a few phone calls exchanged (I noted nothing to paper or e-mail) I finally got an extended warranty for a third year. Paid price quoted, only to be informed it was the GST exclusive price, and had to make another payment.

Main thing is though, it's sorted, although ASUS' after sales service could do with some work.

Thanks to everyone who contributed, in particular Bart's Dad Homer.

    Good night everyone!
