Default Is someone else using our wireless network?

Is there a way to check that i am the only one using our wireless network? When nobody is on the computer the lights still blink on our modem and router, which usually suggests that someone is accessing the internet.

Its quite normal for periodic activity (I have a wired network and there is activity every 10 seconds or so) but if you are running an unsecured wireless network, it really is asking for problems?

If it is correctly secured it should be OK.

    What security do you run.

We set up 128Bit WEP protection when we created the network. It uses a 26 character key. In the router settings we can change it to WPA or WPA 2, which i tried this morning (WPA2) but it wouldn't let us connect to the network after that, so now we've reverted back to WEP.

I applaud you for running some form of wireless security. Not doing so is equivalent to painting on the side of your house / business "please steal my Internet bandwidth". There's no shortage of "leaches", AKA thieves, using netstumbler for just such reasons.

It's normal for an externally facing devices, such as your ADSL modem and firewall to show activity. It could be something innocent, such as dynamic DNS refreshes, or more likely one of a billion PC's probing your PC for nefarious ends.

If WPA is available you should definitely use it - keeping in mind that all devices must be compatible with the standard - not just the router.

If your having problems connecting with WPA check the websites of the vendors for your devices - most supply WPA updates if the hardware is capable of using it.

I checked our download/upload usage and then left the computer on, but no internet sites on screen. When i came back about 15 minutes later the usage had gone up by 2mb, is this normal. Also just to ease my fears is there any way to check that i am the only one on the network, possibly a program on the internet, or something in windows?

What program were you using to measure the traffic usage?

If someone wants to run their wireless network "open", it is their choice. If they make an educated decision to do so and understand the implications then fine.

Do I run my wireless "open". No I don't have much bandwidth and yes I do recommend that people secure their network.

If some runs a wireless network without any form of security, they shouldn't be surprised by the police knocking on the door asking why they're downloading child porn or pirating music and videos.

I leave my network open and will do so untill I see an abnormal rise in my usage, so far I haven't noticed any excess traffic.
How would the police Know I have been looking at kiddie porn?
