    Default Firewall is a nuisance

I am having trouble with my network (just the desktop and my laptop), but the only thing I have done different lately is get my Windows Firewall running.

Now I cannot network and I "suspect" the firewall may be the problem. However despite doing the right things my firewall refuses to turn off. And yes I have gone to the Firewall icon in the control panel.
It may not be the firewall of course but until I can turn it off I get nowhere.
I have used Register Mechanic and checked for viruses
    Windows XP prof.
    Suggestions please
    Tom

You didn't mention anything about 3rd party firewalls. Do you have one? If you do, you shouldn't enable Windows Firewall as, undoubtedly, there will be a conflict in Internet traffic between those two.

    Cheers

Oh dear I have a confession to make. Been supplying duff gen haven't I !!
Fortunately I have reached the age where hopefully I get forgiven.
YES I do have another Firewall - ZONEALARM. And yes it was me that installed it fairly recently - it is of course the reason for my problems. So I tried to get it to accept my network as a trusted route but blowed if I could find the place to discover the IP address. So I have turned if off and gone back to the Windows firewall which does accept my network.

I wouldnt rely on XP's firewall tho. It doesnt stop outgoing traffic, and wont ask u anything.

So, I would either figure out how to fix ZA (I cant tell u how, coz I dont use ZA). Or get another firewall. And, I think, if ZA isnt registered, you cant share a connection (enable ICS in it). Unless its changed.

Just as an aside..... firewalls won't necessarily conflict. I run Kerio and Windows XP firewall together with no problems at all. The reason I run the XP firewall is to avoid annoying messages about it being turned off

What I don't use is the Dynalink router built in hard firewall as there is no way to get some streaming audios that use a wide range of dynamically allocated ports.

i found the reason people dont like
micro firewall is the file sharing
and the illegal downloaders. from file sharing
as well as the gamers it slows the sys dowm
my son is an international gamer
    and the micro firewall
    hinders the sending the info
he even turns his virus scanner off
so to play games is a risky biz

If u have SP2, u can untick the option, so u dont get messages about the firewall being turned off.

To stop that annoying message go to Services in Control Paanel(I wish people would stop having picnics over the keyboard) and turn the firewall service off. Sorry not on an XP box at the mo so can't be more precise.
