Default How to effectively submit your website to search engines for free?

Before you say "try google it", I have tried doing so. I have tried addme.com and submitexpress.com, but both didn't manage to yield the exact result that I want. What do you suggest, PF1 members? I reckon Stu might have a good idea on this?

    Cheers and thanks

Sites like Addme, will submit your site to many search engines almost all of which will give you absolutly ZERO target traffic. You only want visitors that are relevant to your site so forget about the search engines that have nothing to do with NZ or NZ internet users!

First thing to do is add your site to google:
    http://www.google.co.nz/addurl/?continue=/addurl

Here is info on what they like and dont like:
    http://www.google.co.nz/webmasters/

Then try some NZ search engines and directories:

    http://www.nzs.com
    http://www.searchnz.co.nz
    http://www.nzpages.co.nz

Do a search you will find many more NZ search engines and directories.

If you cant find your site when searching using relevant keywords study up on search engine optimisation. This includes adding meta tags to your content, linking with relevant/important sites, content etc..etc..

Search engines such as Google index BILLIONS of pages so there is quite an art to getting your site found.

http://www.searchenginewatch.com is a good starting place.

I get the impression he has already submitted his site to numerous search engines, so he would be asking one of the following.

    1. How do I submit my site to thousands of search engines without any more effort then 3 mouse clicks? (ths has been answered pretty much, Google first, then submit to the bigger NZ specific search engines)

    2. My page cant be found even after I submitted it?, does that mean it didn't actually work? (the answerr would of course be that it can take weeks for a site to show up, and that your site is in no way garenteed to show up in the first few pages of results, or at all if the site is unfinished). We will call this the suck factor.

Are you wanting to submit the website in your profile? Or another site? And for what purpose?

Sorry for being not specific (Metla, you deserve to scrutinise me). I just want to get my website register on search engines so that when I use keywords that specifically target my website, the result would show it being listed. I have tried doing so previously, and my website did get listed. However, after some time, it seems that my website is no longer tracked by Google nor Yahoo!. Thus, I get the impression that my website are not being "effectively submitted to search engines". Regarding Andrew's question, my purpose is to practise my role as a webpage co-ordinator for my school's house. I will let you know the URL when I feel that it deserves to be publicised. Thanks for the input, everyone.

    Cheers

I had a similar problem with a website I set up - my one and only - about a year ago.
I got great help from Press F1 members, and you can check out the thread here: http://www.pressf1.co.nz/showthread.php?t=55762.

Also, I found very useful information on several websites on how to optimise your site's html content to encourage search engines, google especially. Try:

    http://www.web-source.net/web_design_tips4.htm
    http://www.web-source.net/doorways.htm
    http://www.web-source.net/webpage_optimizing.com

    http://builder.com.com/5100-31_14-5079196.html
    http://www.submit-it.com/subopt.htm
and, as the others have said and I am sure you have already done, google information for webmasters:
    http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

    Good luck
