Default wifi on laptop not working

earlier today i went out and bought a D-Link Wifi b/6 Pci card DWL-G510 for about $50 and installed it in my computer.
i downloaded and installed teh latest drivers ect, rebooted my computer and what have you, set up the ssid [..] blah blah blah [..] and then wandered over to my dads laptop to get the second half of the equation sorted out.
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 3002WLMi which my dad bought within the past month.
I enabled the wifi connection, then activated it on the front of the laptop and proceded to configure the settings.
Naturally i opened up the wireless configuration Wizard, it asked me to enter an SSID for my network, so i typed in 'hello'. I click next and it spits at me and yells, more or less, "one or more of the characters you have entered is invalid".
Dumbstruck am i, as on my desktop i used Shekma as my SSID.

    Whats happened?
    Have a great day.

Obviously, you entered one or more invalid characters. (Did you enter "enter"?)

The SSID is a network identifier, so you must use the same SSID on both computers.

i was giving 'hello' as an example of the many things i tried using as the SSID, i entered Shekma on the laptop aswel, but nomatter what i tried it always said it contained invalid characters. Even '2' was invalid.

Try using ANY for the SSID ... like the "any key" it should work. Of course you are using "ad hoc" mode, though this is not likely to be affected by that.

Didnt work, no matter what i put as the ssid it says it contains invalid characters. if i try the exact same thing on my desktop it accepts it willingly.

Might it require uppercase only, or lowercase only? Has it got a default SSID which you can set on the desktop? Do you need to be Administrator to set up WiFi? Have you got a manual for the laptop? When all else fails ...

The manual is paper thin at best, does more of a job at outlining what does which and which does what.
apart from in the specifications it doesnt even make mention of the wifi, let alone tell you how to trouble shoot it.

Are you using Windows to configure the network, or the programs (if any) that came with the Wireless LANS?

Is SP1 or 2 on both, if XP is on both?

Since SP2 has a wireless network wizard.
