    Default PC turns off itself

My daughter's PC developed a problem over Xmas with the kids playing on it. When the PC is switched on, it appears to start, but before it completes the start up process, it simply switches itself off. Normally she takes it to a repair outfit, but being the holidays, that and most others are closed til the new year. Is it any easy problem to resolve? I am able to do some basic doctoring if I know what the problem might be.

    Thanks
    Duron

For help, there is going to be some more information required...

What operating system? ME, XP, 98, 95, 2000? Linux?

What security systems do you use?

Do you dial-up? ADSL? Cable? What is the brand modem?

What type of computer do you have? How old is it?

...it sounds like a trojan or virus and might be rather hard to exorcise without some better information. There's always the possibility that the PSU (power supply) has taken a dive too. Has there been some new hardware installed before it started this action?

There are so many questions to ask and answer........but we can help.

It actually sounds more like a hardware fault, possibly the heatsink may be dislodged from the CPU, or something similar causing a power down after a few seconds. Or a hardware fault in the power supply as above.

You would need to look insude the PC to get a better idea, but as above more info needed (such as if its a desktop PC or a Laptop) etc.

I have never yet seen a trojan or virus that would power a computer off. Not saying they don't exist, but I have not seen one.

With those trojans, you are advised that the computer is shutting down however (as is the case with the Blaster worm).

My take on the original post is that it never completes the loading of Windows.

But it would be most helpful to know at what point it shuts down, and if any warning is given.

    I would step it...
Jack open the case, how is the cpu fan? Stil lon top firmly and still spins?

Let the PC run, but instead of going to windows go to bios and monitor the temp, how is it? Alternatively if ya got motehrboard software installed in windows that monitor temp then use that.

If still crash and no issues found. Rip all ur cards out apart from ur video card and the main HDD see if that works ok.

    Google memtest and run it.
Download HDD utility from ur maker and run it.

    Spyware check with latest definition.
    Virus check with latest definition.

I pop the software checks at the end becos since the PC just shuts down so soon upon turn on.
