Default Setting up broadband, phone, etc; need recommendations

i am moving to Wellington from the US and i need to set up my phone and dsl at home. i don't know the companies in NZ, so i would be interested to learn from your recommendations.

for DSL: i will need to get a 2mbps/128kbps (seems like the fastest offering for "home" user); i dont know how much data i will download; i will be using it for work, so it would probably be more than 1G. i am flexible on price, as long as the connection/service is reliable (goes down very rarely, if at all, and restored quickly) and customer-service is competent.

    who would you recommend for:
    • home land-line
    • long-distance phone service
    • DSL provider
    • cell phone

    thanks much!

    Hi Karl,
Telecom & Telstra Clear both have land lines for phones, Toll calls & DSL. Telstra also have Saturn TV if you get the lot with them they offer a package deal.
Cell phones would probably be either Vodafone & Telecom. Both have pre pay or monthly rental.
Othere may be able to give you more detailed info on this.

    Hi Karl

    Welcome to NZ.
I can relate to where you are at the moment and how you're feeling since I came to settle over here (Auckland region ) after living in California for 17+ years.
Broadband service in NZ is not at all bad considering the size and population of the country but it is not at present up to the level that you may be used to in the States.
That being said, I have used IHUG as my ISP for more than 7 years and have been very pleased with their product as well as the personal service that they offer since I frequently need help in sorting out various problems.
I believe they are slightly cheaper than Telecom and offer all the services you need except cell phone for which you would probably use either Telecom or Vodaphone.
All their home services are currently at 2Mbps down and 128Kbps up.
I have their "Starter pack" which offers 2GB peak time + 2GB off peak per month which fits my needs nicely.
You might want to check out Ihug at http://www.ihug.co.nz/

Let me know if I can be of any further help to you.

If you go with a cable provider then you may be able to use skype for your long distance calls.

Most of the wellington region has access to telstras cable network they also supply cellphones through vodaphone which is GSM, so if you have a gsm phone in the states you would be able to use it here with a new plan
This link will give you a idea of the packages Telstra do.

With the caveat that US GSM often uses a band (1900 MHz) that is not used here (we use 900 MHz).

Therefore your phone would usually need to be a "tri-band" model to be compatable here.

I'm a Telstra (029) mobile customer. It isn't too bad, you pay the same rate as Vodafone, as it uses the Vodafone network - and you can get it on the same bill as your broadband, which is handy. The only thing is that they don't currently supply the new YouChoose plans. Apart from that, they're OK.

If you want to be billed for everything at the same time then Telstra aren't so bad. It depends what service is available where you will be living though, some places are still not wired for Telstra, and some new places are not wired for Telecom (like my apartment!)

Good luck and enjoy your stay in NZ
