Default dvd discs slow my system down

Whenever i put a dvd disc in my drive that isnt blank, or pressed, my system grinds to a halt, as soon as its removed my system carries on.

what the hell is going on?

right click My Computer / select properties / Device Manager / IDE/ATAPI Controllers / Primary IDE Controller & Secondary IDE Controllers. Are they both set to DMA under the Advanced Settings?

What IDE channel do you have the optical drive on - Primary/Secondary and Master/Slave? You using a 40 or 80 wire IDE cable? What are the BIOS settings?

Who installed your new DVD optical drive?

If you enter the BIOS during startup by tapping F8 to enter setup, you should see which drives (hard drive included) are on what IDE channel according to the BIOS. Depending upon your BIOS brand/version, you should be able to expand each IDE device for further details where you can see if the BIOS settings shows DMA or PIO Mode.

You can also open up the case and see what combination of devices are on what IDE channel (and whether the hard drive and optical drive share the same IDE cable). 80-wire IDE cables have 80 very fine lines across the width of the ribbon.

    I installed the drive
the drive is on the secondary IDE channel as Master.
i dont know if i have 80 or 40 wire IDE, but from what i can make out, there are no faint lines. im putting my money on 40-wire ide

    [edit]

didnt relise i was soo far zoomed out on the wikipedia iamge of the 2 cables.
    i without a doubt have 40-wire ide
    Have a great day.
