    Default Windows XP shutdown problem

When I shutdown Windows XP SP2 I get a very brief error message just after the icons have cleared from the desktop. Is there any way I can slow the shutdown process to be able to read the message and thereby rectify the problem.
    Thanks

Try pressing the pause /break button and see if that does any thing.

Heres a good page on tracking down the shut down problem.

Thanks johnboy. I've tried the pause/break key but that has no effect. I've also been onto the help page you advised but until I know what the problem is it's difficult to fix it!

It's most probably a program hanging, when you go to shutup.

Check task manager, while you're using it, and see whats hogging the CPU. or whats taking up the CPU usage. It maybe something thats loading on bootup.

Firstly, you need to get a handle on just what is running when you switch on. Then you can selectively (and prudently!) disable one at a time till the exit problem stops. (If in doubt about what a particular program is for, just google it. You may very well find there are several startup progs you don't need in the process!). For a very good tool to help in this, try strun from nirsoft http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/strun.html It is a very good tool that you will find useful on an ongoing basis.

There are other really good utils (free) at nirsoft, too.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
I tried strun - a great little program.
Also used video cam to video the screen on shutdown - not particularly clear result but at least indicated that the problem was with Boinc Manager for Seti@Home.
