    Male queers and sodomists were sent to gaol.
    I remember a case in late 1930's where a male was gaoled for three years for prancing around town dressed as a woman.

    Females were treated as a joke.

    Even not that long ago.... maybe 20 years... I remember a lesbian couple that lived as 'sisters'. I guess they just didn't feel the need to tell the world- and possibly put up with all the crap that went with it.
