I need help. My laptop DVD writer (Sony DW-Q58A) is able to play dvds fine, but when it comes to burning, it only allows me to burn cds and cannot burn DVDs.
Any clues??

Methinks you posted in the wrong forum...
Anyway, have you tried different media? Try using different brands, and both DVD+R and DVD-R. Also, what writing software are you using?
Thanks Edward for yr prompt reply.
I am using the last version of NERO and the media DVDs are ATi DVD-R 8X

Okeydoke. What happens if you use Windows XP To burn it (Drag 'n' Drop)?
Nero says: "Burn Process failed at 1X (1,385 Kb/s)".
And windows XP says: "An error occured while formatting the medium"

Hi
May be completely off track here but for a simple thing that can go wrong with the latest Nero - just ensure that you have selected dvd (near the top right there is usually an option that will let you select CD or DVD in both Nero Xpress and Nero Startsmart when you first start the program)
Asus P8Z77-V LK, Core i5 3570K, 8GB DDR3 1600, 128GB SSD, 12TB HDD, GeForce GTX660 Ti 2GB, Blu-ray writer, Enermax 750W PSU, Coolermaster CM 690 II Case, Windows 8 Professional
Tukapa,
Same problem...
it's telling me "Burn Process failed at 1X"

Alan, be sure Nero is fully updated. I had a friend with broadband download the 70+ Mb of updates and that solved most burn problems for both of us. As already stated, be sure to get high quality DVD discs.
