Red face Nero BackItUp and Outlook Express

I use Nero BackItUp for (you guessed it !) - backups.

I have read elsewhere that a good way to backup Outlook Express is to "export" from that program. However if I do this my backups end up in two different ways of preserving the information.

Should I ignore using "export" and do all my backups in Nero BackItUp ? Or is export safer please ?

I don't use any backup program but just copy the the files I want backed up to my second hard drive and burn to CD when I remember. My OE emails get backed up by copying the .dbx files which get copied back to replace the OE default files when required. I don't mess around with importing and exporting at all since I have half a dozen folders within OE and as long as all the .dbx files are backed up things are sweet.

The other method you could use is Metla's one of creating a folder on your desktop, "Emails", and dragging all your emails into it from OE and backing up that Emails folder.

At least I think that's how Metla said he did it... you might need to do a search to verify that one.

Not sure if that answers your question or not since you specifically mentioned Nero BackItUp.

Have you tried the Transfer Wizard which is part of XP

Backup Outlook Express (OE) Email and transfer settings to another PC with the XP File and Settings Transfer Wizard

    1. Start the XP File and Settings Transfer Wizard

Go to ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > FILES AND SETTINGS TRANSFER WIZARD

Be careful recommending using that Wizard, Safari. I know of a couple of people who relied on it and lost all their data when they tried restoring it back again after a reformat.

As always, backups are NOT backups unless they have been tested and verified as working first.

I wasn't recommending it I was just asking if they had tried it as another option.

Do you really think MS would include this in XP if it didn't work.

Most likely the people who had the trouble did not follow the instructions.
How could they loose data if the saved it to a CD

I have no idea how the data was lost, it just was.

As for why MS includes it if it doesn't work, there are a number of things that can break in Windows causing the loss of data when things go wrong. One example is that if a user's profile gets corrupted all the contents of My Documents can be kissed goodbye. I store my data elsewhere, on a different partition - in fact on a different hard drive, for that very reason.

You can start your anti-Windows rant now.

    Hi Foxy
I used to backup sometimes only using copy and feel a lot more comfortable in doing that. Think I will do that and also, say every second time use NeroBackItUp. In using any backup for my photos I am a bit worried that I will lose definition. Have seen it said (authoritatively !) that once JPEG files are backed up, then they do not recover fully - because of the compression.
    Thanks

    Hi Misty,

You might be interested in this page which explains a lot about JPEGs and loss of quality when opened and saved. It should put your mind at rest.
