Default PC cannot read usb flash drive

I have a Compac Deskpro (Win 98) with 2 USB ports. When I attach my USB memory stick I get the message that new hardware has been found, but I am unable to install whichever drivers are required. What do I need to read the memory stick?

how are you trying to install the needed drivers ? .......the system WONT have them 'built in' you'll need to either use a cd that came wiht the usbkey or download the correct ones from the net........

Yup, if the usb drive came with drivers, install the drivers first then plug the usb drive in.

It's an IVOGUE 256 mB stick that did not come with any drivers. Any ideas where I can find one?

    They're made by Jetway.
    Good luck finding drivers, though.

I did get a driver setup file (Ivogue_98SE_driver_file), but even after I installed it the drive with the memory stick did not appear. Do I need to install hardware in Control Panel? What category is a USB flash drive?

Have you got Windows 98 or 98SE? It might make a difference that the driver is for 98SE. USB is being laid onto the W9X stuff, so it's a bit difficult.

Try starting the computer with the device plugged in. That might help. It might help to have the device plugged in after the comoputer starts up.

If the driver installed without error messages, there shouldn't be anything else to do., It should just appear in the "My Computer" page when it's plugged in, with an icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen (which you should use to tell the system that you intend to remove it).

I had a similar problem with an external USB disk not showing up in a w98 system even after loading the driver. Do you have drive D: and E: taken up already? If so, add this line into your config.sys file. lastdrive=g:

This will allow w98 to allocate drives up to G:. Without this, w98 only allocates 5 drives.
