Question Ongoing problem with unstable ADSL connection

I have actually posted this question before but since I only had one response (and that in the form of a question) I hope I can be forgiven for posting it again since I find it hard to believe that this problem is unique to my internet connection.
Specifically I have recently had an ADSL connection set up with IHUG as my ISP. I am connected to the internet via a DSL-504G four port Router and I run Windows XP SP2.
In general the service works well and is stable as long as I am actively using it, however I have noticed that after I have left my computer unattended and unused for a few hours, the internet connection fails and all attempts to repair the connection are unsuccessful even though right clicking the local area connection icon in the system tray reports the status as: connected.
And by the same token right clicking the icon and choosing "repair" in the context menu is also of no help even though a dialogue box pops up telling me that the connection is repaired.
The only way I can re-establish the connection is to restart my computer.
I was wondering if some program exists that will send a small packet of information every so often just to keep the internet connection active while I am not in attendance or perhaps there is some other solution to the problem short of having to reboot on each occasion.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

Wasnt that the router that had a vulnerability?

If it is, did u ask Ihug why they gave it to you?

Or whether the router u have doesnt have this vulnerability.

If its still got this vulnerbility, without a possible firmware update?

And did you turn off power management for the NIC?

    Speedy Gonzales:

I was not aware that the router had any vulnerability.
Do you mean that type of router in general or mine specifically?
I have spoken to IHUG and they have been of absolutely no help at all.
I have upgraded the firmware to the latest version as posted on their web site which made no difference at all.

Is this the Dlink DSL 504-G you have?

    http://www.netsecureglobal.com/SITE_...vulnerable.asp

    As it states here

    http://www.egn.com.au/forums/lofiver...php/t4038.html

It maybe due to whats under the idle timeout option in the routers settings somewhere. This may need to be changed to something higher.

It looks like this is for the 504. It may also apply to the 504G.
