    Default Satellite fast internet access

    Hello guys/ladies

With four or five neighbours together we intend to get a dish installed for satellite access. The idea is that we then have a ~five member local area (3KM dia.) network to share this access.
Does anyone of you have experience with that sort of setup? Does anyone know about the costs and how well it actually works at the end. We have vague costings that it may cost us between NZ$ 500-1000.- each for the main setup plus the xtra costs for the individual receiver.
Any help regarding this is very much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Gion

    Internet access?
    TV access?

    Assuming Internet access.
Terrestrial two way satellite is not a trivial event, assuming you will be using an ISP that supports what you want (or that you have a multimillion dollar share of a sattellite with a stationary orbit and downlink)?

The ISP will have the costs that you need, but how are you going to link the neighbours in a 3 kM LAN? The satellite will not do that, unless you each have a complete stand alone installation.

I would guess that the hardware would be in the $2k cost + $2k installation area for one master up/down link, but data costs are usually hellishly expensive. A slow 256 Kbps connection with 10 GB data per month is about $210 per month, and extra data up to a massive $100 per GB

But that would not be nearly enough speed or data for a "community" of 5, so think of multiples of that cost.

Also you may be prevented from "sharing" (using it as a server) even if you manage to network all the "community", by the terms and conditions of the ISP. Check first.

What ISP were you considering using, or which satellite do you have an interest in?

Just suspected (as many people I encounter do seem to be unaware) that getting satellite access is all that is needed to get up and running.

A lot of people tend to forget the several hundred million dollars the orbiting asset cost, and the relatively short life it has. Not unreasonably the satellite owner wants to recoup that cost within its lifetime, so its usually not a cheap option data wise.

Don't you know, godfather, that the technology which gives us infinite bandwidth at zero cost is provided for nothing because all businesses are philanthropists inspired by the principles of the new Information Economy. Examples such as World.com and many others come to mind. (At least the managers work on the principle that money to reward them comes free).
