Default GeForce 6600GT - Fixed one problem, Now I have a different one

A lot of people have probably heard about the 6600GT's and the graphics corruption that was meant to be fixed by an nVidia driver update (some worked, some didn't)

I had that same problem with a few games, and the latest beta drivers at the time fixed it halfway (sometimes the games would be ok, other times they would have the problem).

Upgraded to a newer, final release driver set a while ago and the graphics problem has not come back since.

Now I've just come back from lunch (computer was just sitting idle for maybe a half-hour), killed the screensaver and find this little joyful message staring me in the face:

    Problem report:

The NVIDIA System Sentinel is reporting that the NVIDIA-powered graphics card is not receiving sufficient power.

To protect your hardware from potential damage or causing a potential system lockup, the graphics processor has lowered its performance to a level that allows continued safe operations.

I have never seen that message before at all, and I've been running the card on my crappy 300watt hyena for a while now, so if the PSU couldn't handle it I expect I would have seen something before now?

    :@@:

I think that says it all. Time to upgrade to a more powerful PSU.

You want at least a 400Watt PSU with at least 18Amps on the +12V rail.

Have you considered that the message facility was part of the new drivers? Maybe why you haven't seen it before.
Ever stop to think, and forgot to start again?

lol, yea I've been wanting one with more fans too...

Any suggestions for a PSU that's good enough but not exceedingly expensive?

I suppose the new message could have come with the new drivers, but I've had them a while before the message came up, and yes I have put the extra power connector in.

Just found this on the nVidia forums:

I'm having problems since I've installed the latest drivers (v71.84) with my GeForce FX 5900 Ultra.

The nvidia sentinel is repeatedly popping up and giving me a warning about low power and underclocking my card. This has never happened before I installed the new drivers, and I've even installed the 76.41 beta drivers to see if it would fix it...and it hasn't.
Interstingly v71.84 Is the same version I have, so I has to be the drivers. question is, are they telling the truth?

......and it's also not a power issue... because, yes, I checked...and the molex connecter is still plugged into the card securely directly from a dedicated line on my 510 watt PC Power & Cooling Power supply.
Surely 510 Watt is enough for an FX5900?

It's not the overall Watts that count, it's the Amps.
There are a lot off cheap PSUs out there that have over-inflated Watt ratings but are severely lacking in the Amp department, especially on the +12V rail.

PSU's dont last forever, i had one that was slowly dieing, i had to keep pulling components out of my older PC just to keep it running until i bought a new Power Supply.

you dont need a 400W PSU.

i have a 350W PSU and im running a AMD 64bit Chip with a 6600GT, and it has 20amps on the 12v Rail.

So in the event that I get a new PSU, what do you think would be suitable for my current setup?
