Default Writing on CDs & DVDs

Is it safe to write directly on a disk with a marker pen?
Is it okay to use a standard felt pen or is there something better?

I use a "Staedtler CD/DVD" Pen. Can be purchased from Bookshops like Paper Plus etc. Cheers.

I got my Imation CD pens from Warehouse stationary, if that gives you some more options.

The purists will say it makes a difference, but never experienced any ill affects using regular marker pens myself.

The data on a CD or DVD is held just under the "label" layer, so the only limitation is that the pen should not react with the label surface or scratch the surface, or the disk will be toast.

Anything that complies with that should be fine. The problem exists that not all CDs have the same label side coating properties.

    The issue is covered here
