    Default AVG Questions

I have the latest avg running & have 2 questions, please.

    1) It seems to me that AVG scan is slower than an older version. A scan of 48,000 objects takes 21 minutes. Is this normal?

    2) One item has been changed. Shell 32.dll has changed from 'ok' status to 'changed', what could that mean?

    Thanks PJ

When I was younger I heard but didn't listen.
Now I am older, I listen but cannot hear.

If it is not broke, don't make it broker by trying to make it better. (This applies specifically to PJ)

Hi PJ. 2) One item has been changed. Shell 32.dll has changed from 'ok' status to 'changed', what could that mean? Have you loaded any MS updates since the previous AVG scan? Could account for the change.

Hi PJ. I asked because I had similar once before after an MS update. I accepted the change without any following problems. In fact, from memory AVG did not really give me an option, but was simply advising me that the change had occurred.

That would be expected I believe.

The new scanning engine will be able to scan for different (more) parameters.

If it was quicker one would assume it would be less effective?

    Hey Poppa John,

Reason the scan time is longer now, is that more and more files are becoming capable of hosting viruses, archived/compressed files (zipped files, cab files) etc have now been enabled, I think by default it use to do selective scanning, only scanning files they knew could contain or be viruses. It now scans everything, including pictures, movies, music, etc.

As the virus definitions grow larger, the more it has to scan for within files. This would result in longer times as well. The more files you have too would increase this time.

To be honest I would love to have your 21 minutes compared to my over ~40 minutes to complete a scan, but I guess you would expect longer times if you nearly maxed out your 200GB drive.

I find the cab files that MS store on your computer take a while to scan, everytime I look at what it's scanning, it always seems to be in one of their cab files.

Mine also takes ages to scan in comparison to the earlier version, I have a new hard drive with not much on it, clean install of XP and it still takes 15-20 minutes. It is also very slow to exit the scan window when I abort the test due to boredom.

Can anyone tell me how you can stop the program scanning every day... it's really annoying!
